Figuring Out Food: Avoid Canine Overweight

- Calculate the calories in your dog’s typical meal(s.) Aim to stay at or slightly under your dog’s Daily Energy Requirement.
- Food Rewards should be a nutritious part of your dog’s daily diet–even though we call them “cookies” or “treats.”
- Calculate the calories in the Food Rewards you use (for example, a hotdog has about 130 calories.)
- Adjust your dog’s dinner to reflect the calories the dog’s eaten as Food Rewards in training that day.

Taking Turns Creates Order in Multi-Dog Households
Teach each dog in the household to wait for his or her turn when receiving treats. Say “This is for Fido” and put a treat into Fido’s mouth; “This is for Rover” and give the treat to Rover; “This is for Spot” and give the treat to Spot—and so on. If dog tries to take a treat out of turn, close your hand over the treat and use your body to block the pushy dog’s access to the treat.
After a few repetitions, your dogs will begin listening for their name to get their treat. Increase the challenge by asking for a simple behavior to earn their treat. “Dogs sit” and then each dog is called by name to get a treat. This is the start of creating an orderly multi-dog household.
